Project story

The all ages, family friendly Village of Oak Park Drupal MeetUp Group (VOPDUG) was first brought to life with a Drupal Association Community Initiative Grant. (Read the write up.) It funded us from October 2012 to March 2013. From April 2013 to now (October 2013) I have been providing the funds personally.

The goal of this project is to provide a centralized way for people to sustain the group. Those interested in supporting a group open to contributors of all ages, or those local to Oak Park will be interested.

Meetups are mini 4 hour sprints where everyone works on tasks involved with Drupal, usually Drupal 8 Core. It is as open as a Get Involved sprint: anyone with a laptop and site building experiece is welcome, and we have tasks for every skillset.

Budget:

$20x11 meeting space for 11 months, November 2013 - October 2014. (One of the months is an all day sprint.)

$76x2 cost of meetup.com which keeps the group connected and brings in new members. Two 6 month meetup costs.

$200 meeting space for an all day sprint. Drupal Global Sprint Weekend January 25, 2014 and January 26, 2014  Our local event: VOPDUG Sunday Jan 26 All-Day Sprint

$100 coffee, snack, lunch for all day sprint.

Total: $672

All ages?

Our youngest contributor was 10 for their first contribution. Others are 14, 18... to 60's. Parents with in arms babies are encouraged to just bring them, kids too young to concentrate on contributing are welcome, and we recommend parents bring snacks and toys to keep them amuzed. Even the mentors are young.  From our 2013 sprint: "I have to say, watching Cathy coach a 14 year old girl through teaching a 60 year old man how to use Git was a mind-blowing experience (in all the good ways)." -Crell

Background

Listen to DrupalEasy Podcast 114 about sprints to hear a bit about how we got started, and the Portland DrupalCon Mentoring Session about how I almost forgot to ensure we had tables at our last year's Global Sprint Weekend sprint.
